Using the story of his own family as a starting point, Daniel Blaufuks initiates a search on the presence of Jewish refugees in Portugal at the outset of World War II. Thanks to its geographical position - Europe's westernmost country - and the declared neutrality of its governing powers, Portugal becomes the goal to be reached at all costs for thousands of refugees wanting to flee to the US or Latin America. However, the presence of Jews in Portugal was considered to be a disadvantage by the government as it could jeopardize the country's neutrality. They were scattered around Lisbon and forbidden to get a job and earn a salary, which turned their life in a sort of mandatory holidays. As we read through several letters written by Jews at that time, anxiety and fear pervaded the life of these men and women who once had had their own country and family.
